Of Teachers and Horse Blinders

I can't believe that SOME teachers are seeing one end of this contract negotiation and completely, foolishly blinded on the other end.

ENOUGH with who did what and did nothing. The Union (as a group or in part/individual members) or GP is not the sole responsible for the failure of this contract negotiation.

It's a basic principle that when you go to a contract "NEGOTIATION"-- ALL parties, YES INCLUDING RHEE, should be ready to actually negotiate.

RHEE did not really negotiated. She merely put on the table WHAT SHE WANTS and leave no room for the other members to negotiate for. It's an old case of take it or nothing.

It reminds me a form government. It's called DICTATORIALSHIP.

It's true that money changes everything. LOL. It can even blind teachers.

Rhee is not capable of bending her back. It's her way or highway. Parker is right when he said that Rhee is more concerned firing teachers rather than helping them out.

I love your blog btw. What Rhee is doing is an unfair labor practice. She is not negotiating in good faith as required on both sides. Please check out my latest on The Washington Teacher @ www.thewashingtonteacher.blogspot.com Rhee has argued that Parker should man up- well he has in his latest comments in Union City. A must read. Keep doing what you are doing. :-)

here's a quote from rhee's letter to the dcps community:

"As I mentioned earlier today, students cannot wait for accountable teachers while adults argue"

i could not agree with her more. and, now, while, we (the WTU) argued, she was acting.

candi, thanks for the compliments.

i read your post and happy that GP is finally saying something that totally makes sense. i think his approach on the last months were not for the best interest of the members BUT MORE OF A POLITICAL maneuvering. I hope they stop the politicking and actually WORK for the members they are SUPPOSE TO SERVE.

I admire GP and Rhee on their innovative ways of reforming the system. I'm with them on this.

Note though that I DO NOT SUBSCRIBE to GP or Rhee rhetorics on the proposed, err... FAILED contract.

I DON'T like GP's action when he played it safe and NOW starts yacking when in fact it's TOO LATE to yack.

I DON'T like Rhee or anyone who would go against tenureship. Since she claims NOW that there are other ways of getting rid of dinosaurs in the classroom-- WHY THEN FOCUS on abolishing tenureship in the FAILED contract?

TIME AND AGAIN this is a case of missed opportunities because of TOO MUCH politicking and BULLYING.

Rhee is right: FOCUS ON THE CHILDREN'S NEEDS. But PLEASE, don't leave the adults behind. Basic Psychology 101.

ms. mindless,

i'm with you on this. HOWEVER, as a professional coming from the corporate-- the product (students can't wait...) is as important as the process (teacher tenureship).

this is where rhee is failing in my book. she's so focus with the PRODUCT but couldn't care less on the PROCESS.

in my own words: POOR PROCESS = POOR PRODUCT.

in real california cheese words: GREAT CHEESE comes from HAPPY COWS.

we just fundamentally disagree on the issue of tenureship. i just don't believe in it. i do believe in a form of due process and appeals to termination decisions, but, in my opinion, that doesn't have to mean tenure in its present form. i don't think that any profession should have job security so locked up. i truly believe that it allows people to get lazy. that stereotype of the lazy government worked didn't just come out of nowhere. i believe that tenure for government employees helped create this beast of a system that we are dealing with today.

have a great day!

hi ms. mindless,

hope you had a great day in your school today.

you say: "i do believe in a form of due process and appeals to termination decisions, but, in my opinion, that doesn't have to mean tenure in its present form"

i believe we're on the same page in terms of due process and appeals. AND ACTUALLY, tenureship makes due process a REALITY.

in DCPS, you'll have your tenureship once you have demonstrated your qualifications and skills to teach. CONSISTENTLY in 3 consecutive years.

first point: if a dinosaur made it to tenureship... i believe the dinosaur is not the main issue. the REAL PROBLEM is the person who let the dino in the classroom. in our case-- the incompetent PRINCIPALS.

second point: NOT everybody with tenure is a dinosaur. why would you want to strip everybody the privilege if tenureship if some of us don't deserve it? some of us earned it through hardwork and giving more than what is required.

in a simple, classroom analogy-- it's NOT ok to deprive an entire graduating class their diplomas just because some of their classmates are cheaters and losers.

believe me, i can't stand stupid teachers. i work with some of them on daily basis.

believe me, i had a 20-year veteran teacher terminated using the 90-day process.

believe me, the current precautionary measures that we have is enough to weed out the non-performing teachers.

believe me, some principals are stupid. they know when they have a bad teacher but don't do their share to kick dinos out the classroom.

in our case today, the efforts to remove tenureship is more than weeding out the dinos in the classroom. there is a power tripping behind this effort. BELIEVE IT OR NOT.
